On 17-19 October 2014 Adalah will hold its 9th annual Arab law students’ camp for dozens of participants who study at law schools throughout Israel.

On 17-19 October 2014 Adalah will hold its 9th annual Arab law students’ camp in Neve Shalom (Wahat al-Salam) for dozens of participants who study at law schools throughout Israel. 



Camp Program: 

Day 1 / Friday, 17 October 2014

8:30                    Leaving from Haifa / Nazareth / Wadi 'Ara 

10:00 - 16:00 Jaffa Tour: Violations of political and social rights in Jaffa – one of the most  beautiful yet miserable Palestinian cities in Israel. Historian and activist Sami Abu Shehadeh and Attorney Nassim Shaqr, a member of Adalah's Board of Directors will lead the tour.

17:00 – 18:00 Arrival to Wahat al-Salam and room assignment

18:00 – 19:00 Dinner

19:00 – 20:30 Keynote Lecture and Q&A: Ha'aretz journalist Amira Hess on her coverage of the Gaza War. 

20:30 – 22:00  Villa Touma: A special screening of the Palestinian film directed by Suha Arraf. 

 

 

Day 2 / Saturday, 18 October 2014

8:30 – 9:30       Breakfast

9:30 – 12:00      The Laws of War: Does international law protect the right to life of children? How and where is it possible to prosecute those responsible for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza during the recent operation?

A Skype video presentation by Samir Zaqout, head of the Field Research Unit of Al Mezan on the work of Gaza's legal organizations during and after the War. 

Legal training workshops by: 

Dr. Hala Khoury-Bisharat, Carmel Academic College, lecturer in international criminal law, former Chairperson of the Board of Directors, Adalah.

Attorney Bana Shoughry-Badarne, Hebrew University International Human Rights Law Clinic, former Legal Director, The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel.

Attorney Tamar Fieldman, Legal Director, OPT Program, The Association for Civil Rights in Israel.

Dr. Munir Nusseibeh, Director at the Human Rights Clinic of Al Quds University.

12:15 – 13:30  Freedom of Expression: What are the limits of freedom of expression on social networks? Do employers have the right to fire employees for their private posts on Facebook? When can the police arrest an individual due to his/her Facebook posts? 

Lecture and Q&A: Attorney Jonathan Klinger, specialist in issues of freedom of expression. 

13:30 – 16:00 Lunch and Break

16:00 – 19:00 The Right to Protest: What are the laws that apply to protests? What if you are arrested at a demonstration? What are your rights? What are laws of detention, and how to represent protestors at detention hearings? 

Legal training workshops by:

Attorney Orna Cohen, former senior attorney at Adalah in the criminal justice department.

Attorney Alaa Mahajna, private attorney representing many human rights activists.

Adalah Attorney Aram Mahameed, specializing in criminal law and detention.

10:00 – 11:30     Keynote speaker: Supreme Court Justice Saleem Joubran: An open dialogue between the students and Justice Joubran, moderated by Attorney Hussein Abu Hussein, Chairman of Adalah's Board of Directors. 

11:30 – 11:45     Coffee Break

11:45 – 13:15    How to Build a Legal Case:  How to convert a problem into a complaint/ lawsuit/ petition to be filed before the court.
