Adalah: Lieberman's Incitement Against Work in OPT Proves Its Importance and Effectiveness
In response to the ongoing campaign against human rights organizations led by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, the head of Yisrael Beiteinu, and other right-wing political parties, Adalah stated that, "The current attack on Adalah and other human rights organizations that work on cases to promote and protect the rights of Palestinians in the 1967 Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) began in the wake of our cooperation with the Goldstone Mission and our influence on its final conclusions. This activity angered many right-wing Israeli actors, first and foremost the extremist Im Tirtzu organization, which published reports in which it 'accused' human rights organizations of inciting against the army of the Israeli Occupation, and of helping to expose Israeli practices during the recent war on the Gaza Strip."
Adalah further stated that, "The formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate the funding sources of human rights organizations is an additional step in this unrestrained campaign, which constitutes an attempt to intimidate them, to prevent them from continuing their work against the practices of the Occupation, and to create the impression that they are funded by 'terrorist organizations' and illegal sources."
Adalah added, "Avigdor Lieberman's incitement against human rights organizations working in the OPT proves the importance and effectiveness of their work in protecting human rights. This incitement will not dissuade us from persevering in our work to defend the rights of the Arab minority in Israel and the rights of our people living under Occupation in the West Bank and Gaza. On the contrary, it increases our determination and our belief in the validity and importance of our work."
It should also be stressed that the majority of human rights organizations publish a list of their donors for public view in their annual reports, posted on their websites. Adalah files regular reports to the Israeli Income Tax Authority and National Insurance Institute, in accordance with the law. As a result, the Israeli Registrar of Associations awarded Adalah with a "Certificate of Good Governance", without Adalah requesting it, which was valid until the end of 2009. In addition, Adalah has submitted its financial reports for the previous two years to the Registrar of Associations this week, following their approval by Adalah's General Assembly on 17 December 2010.
