The Right for Arab Representation in Arab Local Government
HCJ 5734/99, Omar Imbaraki v. Yitzhak Edan, Mayor of Mazra'ah, et al.
Petition filed in 8/99 against the government-appointed Mayor and Local Council Secretary (both ultra-Orthodox Shas party members) of the Arab village of Mazra'ah demanding that the appointment of the Council Secretary be rescinded on the grounds that it was politically biased, with recruitment conducted through a closed bid, which effectively excluded all Arab residents of the village.
Result: Petition withdrawn in 9/00, as open elections were scheduled to take place on the day following the last hearing. Court ordered the respondents to pay NIS 5,000 in legal fees to Adalah.
