Adalah Participates
in Meeting with Ms. Mary Robinson, the UN High Commissioner for Human
Rights
On
November 9, 2000, Adalah representatives Rina Rosenberg and Gadeer Nicola attended
a meeting for Palestinian and Israeli NGOs to discuss the current crisis with
the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Mary Robinson. Adalah
presented Ms. Robinson with a statement
outlining its concerns about mass arrests of and human rights abuses against
Palestinian citizens of Israel.
The
November 9 meeting represented the first time that Ms. Robinson met with
Palestinian NGOs in Israel to hear about the current conflict. Adalah,
Ittijah, the Mosawa Center and the Ilam Center were the NGOs present
representing the Palestinian citizens of Israel. There were two important
outcomes of the meeting: Ms. Robinson promised to maintain close contact with
the newly-appointed Commission of Inquiry, and she will include information
about human rights abuses against Palestinian citizens of Israel by the Israeli
police in her report on her visit to Israel and the Occupied Territories.
